The Dioceses of Kurunegala, Anuradhapura and Batticaloa carried out a variety of activities to mark the Week of Action declared by Caritas Internationalis in connection with World Food Day.
Eucharistic Celebrations were held where the Campaign Prayer on the Right to Food was recited by all participants, food items were distributed among needy families and long-term plants for food production were given to poor farmers along with financial assistance to undertake cultivation work.
In Kurunegala, Food Campaign posters were put up in all the Parishes in order to motivate the congregations to lend their support for the campaign.
In Batticaloa, a representative of the UN’s Food and Agricultural Organisation (FAO) was among the guest speakers at a special event organized to mark the campaign.
In Anuradhapura, a Mobile Clinic on Chronic Kidney Disease was held, along with an awareness program on its causes. The Food Security program implemented by Caritas Sri Lanka has highlighted the value and importance of organic farming methods while discouraging the widespread use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides which have been identified as the chief causes for the prevalence of Chronic Kidney Diseases of Unknown Origin (CKDU) in that area.
