Caritas relief aid for flood victims

In the immediate aftermath of the severe flood and landslide situation that prevailed in 22 out of Sri Lanka’s 25 Administrative Districts in December 2014, Caritas Sri Lanka with the help of some of its international partners rushed post-emergency relief assistance to nearly 3,000 affected families in the Dioceses of Kandy, Colombo, Ratnapura, Anuradhapura, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Kurunegala, Jaffna/Vanni, Badulla, Chilaw and Mannar. In fact, according to the Government’s Disaster Management Center, 1.5 million persons had been badly affected, with 109,875 persons living in 599 temporary camps. 5,200 houses were destroyed while 16,290 more were partially damaged. A majority of the victim families are yet to recover from the adverse effects of this disaster. Meanwhile, the damage caused to agriculture was enormous too, thus impacting badly on the livelihoods of many.

In a heart- warming response to the Emergency Appeal sent out by Caritas Sri Lanka through Caritas Internationalis, five partners within and outside the Caritas Confederation pledged over 200,000 Euros in funding support.

One of its components is a special project initiated by CAFOD UK/START FUND under which nearly 1,750 affected families in Anuradhapura, Batticaloa and Trincomalee Dioceses are being provided with relief aid consisting of food and non food items. Each beneficiary family would receive a package of goods worth over Rs. 8,000/-. Food items such as rice, sugar, dhal, dried sprats, milk, tea leaves and condiments are provided to cover a family’s two-week requirements, while the non-food items include bed sheets, towels, sarongs, sarees, plastic mats and sanitary requirements.

The distribution of relief aid is being undertaken in the Districts by the respective Caritas Diocesan Centres under the guidance of the Caritas Sri Lanka National Centre.
