A three-day residential Workshop on Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was held from 03rd to 05 June 2015 for a group of 40 persons from Kurunegala, Anuradhapura and Batticaloa where a project on “ Substantiation of Community Institutions for Sustainable Agriculture for Food Security” is being implemented with funding assistance from Caritas Norway. Among the participants were Caritas Diocesan Directors, Program Coordinators, Field Officers, Agricultural Instructors, volunteers and selected farmers. The venue for this training program was the Rice Research and Development Institute in Batalagoda, Ibbagamuwa.
The team of resource persons comprised well-trained experts from the Department of Agriculture in Gannoruwa, Peradeniya and the Chief Facilitator was Mr M U P Jayasundera, Agricultural Officer attached to that institution.
The Workshop covered five major components of IPM, namely pest identification, monitoring and assessing pest numbers and damage, guidelines for management action, preventing pest problems and using a combination of biological, cultural, physical/mechanical and chemical tools.
