Nearly 80 grass root level leaders from 13 Dioceses attended a capacity building program on Social Justice and Good Governance held at SEDEC auditorium on 6th August 2015.
The program included sessions on “Rights of voters and main election laws” by Mr M M Mohamed, Deputy Elections Commissioner, “Role of election monitors” by Mr Manjula Gajanayake, National Organiser-Centre for Monitoring Election Violence (CMEV) and “Proposed electoral systems” by Mr Upul Fernando, Attorney-at-Law.
Welcoming the participants, Mr Newman Fernando, Senior Executive Manager of Caritas Sri Lanka said that it was encouraging to see a wide representation of Diocesan activists attending such a training program and requested them to impart to their community members the wealth of knowledge that they gain at forums like this.
Mr Rohana Hettiarachchi, Executive Director of People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFEREL) spoke on the “March 12th Declaration” in which several political, civil society and religious leaders made a call to the people to elect good candidates as future parliamentarians and reject unsuitable contestants.
A special session on “What is Good Governance and Social Justice” was jointly facilitated by Prof Sarath Wijesuriya of the University of Colombo and Dr A S Chandrabose of the Open University of Sri Lanka.
Dr Jehan Perera, Executive Director of National Peace Council joined the resource persons as a panelist at an Open Forum held at the conclusion of the sessions.
