CARITAS RUSHES RELIEF AID TO FLOOD AFFECTED AREAS

In the aftermath of the unprecedented flood and landslide situation that arose in several parts of the country in the past week, Caritas Sri Lanka SEDEC has rushed much-needed humanitarian aid to the Dioceses of Kandy, Kurunegala, Chilaw, Anuradhapura, Colombo, Mannar, Trincomalee, Ratnapura and Jaffna / Vanni. Relief programs to provide essential food and non-food items to thousands of affected communities mostly living in safe locations set up in several locations including in parishes in the respective dioceses commenced over the weekend and are on-going.

Relief assistance provided thus far include cooked food to 150 persons in Maspotha, Wigodawatte (Kurunegala); dry rations to 26 families in Pettigala, Balangoda DS division (Ratnapura); cooked food (lunch packets) to 400 persons and dry ration packs to 150 people staying in safe locations in Gurugalla, Dehiowita & Ruwenwella (Ratnapura); cooked food and dry food rations for 245 families in 11 locations in Chilaw diocese; cooked food and dry food rations for 1000 families in 11 locations including 05 Parishes in Kurunegala diocese.

Meanwhile, Caritas member partners worldwide have already responded positively with funding resources in response to the Emergency Appeal launched by Caritas Internationalis (CI).

The Caritas Diocesan Centres, under the guidance of the respective Diocesan Directors, have reached out to the people in distress and assisted them in a variety of ways, including the provision of cooked food, dry rations, clothing, bottled drinking water, mats, medicines, sanitary items etc.

The National Director of Caritas Sri Lanka, Rev. Fr. George Sigamoney and several members of the National Centre staff have visited Ratnapura, Chilaw, Kurunegala, Kandy and Colombo dioceses  to support and guide the respective Diocesan Centres in relief operations.
