A group of 35 persons consisting of Field Officers of the Caritas Norway funded Food Security Project, Diocesan Directors, lead farmers and volunteers from Kurunegala, Anuradhapura and Batticaloa Dioceses participated in a two- day training program on bee- keeping held on 2nd and 3rd June 2016 at the Bee Development Unit in Bindunuwewa, Bandarawela. Also present were selected Agricultural Instructors from the Department of Agriculture.
Theory and practical sessions held during the training included inputs on production and processing of bee’s honey, maintenance and domestication of bee colonies, production of flora for bees, artificial feeding, production of bee keeping appliances, pest and disease control.
Among the key learning points of the training was the importance of being proactive in order to multiply bee colonies and expanding production, instead of waiting for natural swarming of the bees.
