A 3-day workshop was held recently at the Caritas Sri Lanka Auditorium to build the capacities of the plantation community leaders from Self Help Groups (SHG) in the Dioceses of Kandy, Rathnapura and Galle. Under a project titled “Promoting the Rights of Marginalized Estate Labour Communities”, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) through SPICE Sri Lanka, the communities in the plantation sector are empowered and provided with skills and awareness to lead a dignified life while helping their communities to assert their rights.
During the training workshop, the participants were made aware of social tools such as advocacy, lobbying and effective communication while also highlighting gender sensitivity in working towards the achievements of their goals and objectives.
The workshop which was held from 12th to 14th October 2016 had the participation of 43 SHG leaders and focused on the emerging problems in the plantation communities. The modules also gave guidelines, tools and techniques to address such issues systematically without giving room for any misunderstanding or conflict in their communities.Mr. Siyon De Alwis, Senior Development Consultant conducted the trainings on Advocacy, Lobbying and Communication Skills while Ms. Prehashini Jeevaretnam, a freelance Trainer facilitated the training on Gender Awareness.
