A two -member delegation from Caritas Japan visited Caritas Sri Lanka on 26th November and met with Rev. Fr. Shanthi Kumar Weliwita, National Director and the Program Officers of the Safe Migration Project supported by Caritas Japan.
Ms. Yoko Yokoyama – Programme Officer, International Desk and Ms. Mari Suzuki for Caritas Japan held discussions with local Caritas members to assess the impact of the Safe Labour Migration Project which has received their financial assistance since 2013.
They examined the need for such a programme in Sri Lanka at the present time and the Caritas endeavor to incorporate it in the Strategic Plan for the years ahead. The delegates confirmed their interest in including Caritas Sri Lanka under their own Strategic Plan for future fund allocations so as to ensure the continuation of the Safe Migration Project in Sri Lanka.
During their stay, the delegates visited Caritas Kandy – SETIK and also had the opportunity to take part in an information- sharing session at a regional workshop onSafe Migration held in Batticaloa on 2nd December 2016. Leaders of Community Bassed Organisations, Grama Niladharis, Development Officers of the Divisional Secretariats and female members of the Safe Migration Network participated in the information sharing workshop. The grass root level leaders who attended the session were made aware of the past, present and emerging migration trends in Sri Lanka, as well as discussions on the social, economic and cultural impacts of labour migration.
Under the Caritas Safe Migration Project, awareness sessions aimed at enhancing the knowledge of potential migrant workers on legal, social and cultural factors related to their jobs, roles and stay abroad are conducted periodically.
