Under the project for “Substantiation of Community Institutions for Sustainable Agriculture to Ensure Food Security”, a two- day workshop was held on Farmer Field Schools (FFS) Methodology for a group of nearly 30 participants including Diocesan and National Centre staff and volunteers, as well as selected farmers. The Dioceses of Batticaloa, Kurunegala and Anuradhapura participated in this program held 30th and 31st January 2014 at Rathnasiri Wickramanayake National Training Centre in Hantane, Kandy.
The workshop was preceded on 29th January by a Progress Review Meeting held to evaluate the Diocesan activities and to identify the gaps in project implementation. A field visit was also undertaken to the model home garden of the Horticultural Research and Development Institute (HORDI) and the Agricultural Technology Park at Gannoruwa, Peradeniya.
The Resource Persons at the workshop were Mr. M U P Jayasundera, Agricultural Officer, Dept. of Agriculture (subject : Integrated Pest Management), Mrs. Chandrika Herath, Agricultural Instructor, Dept. of Agriculture (subject: Compost fertilizer preparation and pest repellants), Dr, Jayanth Attapattu, Deputy Director, Dept.of Agriculture ( subject; FFS methodology in paddy cultivation), Mrs. Priyanjani Madana, Deputy Director, Dept. of Agriculture (subject: FFS Methodology and the roles and responsibilities of the facilitator) and Mr. H.M.Thilakaratne, Asst. Director, Dept. of Agriculture, (subject: Demonstration on establishing home gardens and advanced techniques of crop cultivation).
