Information Sharing Sessions among JournalistsTwo separate Information Sharing Sessions for the Journalists of Mass media were conducted by CARITAS SRI LANKA – in Tamil stream on the 1st June at Nuwara Eliya Parish Pastoral Centre and in Sinhala stream at SED Galle Centre on the 8th June 2022. The Media personals from the Plantation Dioceses of Kandy, Badulla, Ratnapura, Galle and Colombo participated and shared their practical experiences on the lives & the social issues of the Plantation Community in Sri Lanka.
The objectives of the sessions were two fold.
The first objective was to share/update information on the lives & social issues of the Plantation Community, so that they in turn produce paper articles and video clips and documentaries depicting the plight of the lives of the Plantation Community.
The second objective was to create an awareness among the public of the social issues faced by this most vulnerable & underprivileged community in Sri Lanka, so that, irrespective of race & religion, all Sri Lankans will voice their concerns over this most vulnerable and underdeveloped community in Sri Lankan society as this Community will commemorate in 2023-2024, the 200th Anniversary of the arrival (1823-1824) of their ancestors in then Ceylon, so that the Government will take necessary policy decisions to better their lives.
During the above sessions, discussion & sharing was done as per the four main components, namely Education, Health, Livelihood and Land & Housing which had been the major fields with unresolved issues for decades.
Some recommendations were highlighted as possible interventions for the development in each of the Components under study. Therefore for further information please refer to the pdf attached.
