On October 16, 2024, Caritas Kandy SETIK, in collaboration with Caritas Sri Lanka SEDEC, hosted an inspiring World Food Day celebration in Hatton. In line with this year’s theme, “Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future,” the event spotlighted the importance of ensuring accessible, nutritious food for all and emphasized sustainable practices for building resilient food systems. The event brought together religious leaders, local communities, and passionate advocates to spotlight the critical issue of food security and explore sustainable ways to nourish vulnerable populations. Guided by this year’s theme of strengthening local food systems, the celebration was a meaningful reminder of the power of community-driven resilience.
The event was graced by Rev. Fr. Luke Nelson, National Director of Caritas Sri Lanka, and Mrs. Nilani Tissera, National Coordinator of the Food Security Program, along with Mr. K. Hershanth and Ms. Amali Shamani, Regional Coordinators from the national center. Rev. Msgr. Milroy Fonseka, the Vicar General of Kandy Diocese, the day’s Chief Guest, delivered a rousing speech on the importance of food security for sustainable community growth.
Mrs. Nilani Tissera shared insights on food security challenges in Sri Lanka and globally, highlighting Caritas Sri Lanka’s ongoing food security program. Supported by Caritas Norway, this program has reached thousands of at-risk individuals, providing crucial assistance in times of need. In his address, Rev. Fr. Luke Nelson underscored Caritas’ commitment to building a future where everyone has access to affordable and nutritious food. He emphasized that Caritas Sri Lanka’s initiatives are part of a global mission to alleviate hunger and create sustainable livelihoods to reduce poverty.
An engaging exhibition organized by Caritas Kandy SETIK featured a colorful display of Sri Lankan heritage and practical demonstrations aimed at promoting sustainable practices. Visitors experienced the richness of traditional Sri Lankan foods while learning about modern home gardening techniques, eco-friendly pest repellents, and effective composting systems. A curated selection of books and articles on agriculture, home gardening, and food security was available to broaden knowledge, drawing in students, farmers, and community organizers alike.
The event saw a robust turnout from members of local Community-Based Organizations (CBOs), all eager to learn and share ideas. Participants enthusiastically engaged with the exhibition displays, discussing ways to adopt these practices in their own communities. Many expressed gratitude for the role Caritas plays in improving food access and security in their regions.
World Food Day 2024 in Hatton wasn’t just a celebration—it was a powerful call to action. Through collaboration, awareness, and shared resources, Caritas Kandy SETIK and Caritas Sri Lanka-SEDEC aim to build resilient communities capable of facing today’s food security challenges head-on. This event reinforced the idea that sustainable food security isn’t just about access but also about empowering communities to thrive and preserve their rich cultural heritage.
