On the 2nd of September 2024, Caritas Sri Lanka conducted an Election Awareness session at the Caritas Sri Lanka Auditorium under the Misereor-supported peace-building project. The event was attended by 36 project beneficiaries, stakeholders, program coordinators, 13 DC Directors, and National Center staff. The aim was to provide critical insights into the upcoming Presidential Election of 2024 and its procedures. The session also focused on equipping participants with the knowledge to convey election-related information to their respective communities.
The facilitator for the event was Mrs. Nadeeshani Perera, Executive Director of Transparency International Sri Lanka. Mrs. Perera’s detailed presentation helped participants understand the steps involved in the presidential election process. She also addressed the current economic situation in Sri Lanka, a key factor influencing the political landscape. The session allowed attendees to raise questions, which led to interactive and meaningful discussions.
The key highlight of the session was the participants’ ability to grasp and later share the election procedures with their teams and contacts. This knowledge dissemination will support broader community awareness, helping more people navigate the upcoming election with confidence. The introduction to Sri Lanka’s current economic challenges provided valuable context, which was well-received by the audience.
The event showed active participation, with many attendees raising insightful questions. The interactive nature of the session ensured that the information provided was understood thoroughly. Caritas Sri Lanka – SEDEC successfully facilitated this space for open dialogue and learning, reinforcing its commitment to civic education.
The main outcome of the session was that all participants left with a clear understanding of the current political situation and gained insights on how to approach the upcoming elections. Additionally, it was noted that several Caritas Diocesan Centers partnered with PAFFREL for election observation during the Presidential Election 2024, and there is hope that they will contribute similarly in the forthcoming parliamentary election 2024 as well.
This Election Awareness programme was a crucial step towards educating communities on their civic duties and rights, empowering them to actively participate in the political process for a better future.
