On the 27th of June, the ECPP unit of Caritas Sri Lanka, under the LLPP project, conducted a significant research validation session at the CSL Conference Hall. This research focused on the culture and identity of the plantation community in selected districts. Expert academics and professionals attended the event, providing valuable insights and critiques to refine the research findings.
The primary objectives to conduct this research were:
- To compile a comprehensive document with reliable information on the identity issues faced by the Indian Tamils of Sri Lanka.
- To provide a policy document to the Government of Sri Lanka and policymakers, addressing the identity concerns of the Indian Origin Tamils in the country.
Dr. W. G. Somarathne, the researcher initiated the session with a presentation of the research findings. Following this, the distinguished academics shared their comments and suggestions.
The event saw the participation of Prof. T. Thanaraj – a Professor in Education, Prof. A. S. Chandabose – a Professor of Social Studies, at the Open University of Sri Lanka, Ms Jahana Selvarasa – Senior Lecturer, Department of Legal Studies, Open University of Sri Lanka, Mr. Odayappan Arumugan – Development Consultant and Guest Lecturer at the University of Peradeniya, Colombo, and Kelaniya, Mr Sudesh Rodrigo – consultant of Thambapanni Green Edge Pvt Ltd, Dr W. G. Somarathne – team leader of research panel, Rev. Fr. Luke Nelson – National Director of CSL, Program Manager and ECPP Unit Staff Members.
With these comments from expert academics, the ECPP unit aims to finalize and publish the research soon. This comprehensive document will serve as a critical resource for policymakers, ensuring that the identity issues of the Indian Tamil community are adequately addressed and represented.
