On February 19, 2025, Caritas Sri Lanka – SEDEC held a special event at BMICH, Lotus Hall, Colombo, to mark 20 years since the devastating 2004 tsunami. The event brought together international partners, religious leaders, communities, and humanitarian workers to honor the lives lost, appreciate the strength of survivors, and reflect on the efforts to rebuild after the disaster. It was a day of remembrance, filled with stories of courage, artistic performances of hope, and a strong commitment to helping others.

The event began with a Holy Eucharistic Celebration, creating a sacred and respectful atmosphere. Religious leaders from different faiths joined in prayer, showing the unity that helped Sri Lanka recover from its darkest times. A moment of silence, floral tributes, and the lighting of lamps at the Tsunami Memorial Monument allowed attendees to reflect on both the sorrow and the hope that followed the tragedy.

Many distinguished guests attended, including Chief Guest Mr. Alistair Dutton, Secretary General of Caritas Internationalis, and His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, Archbishop of Colombo. The event featured a graceful welcome dance and an opening speech by Most Rev. Dr. Justin Bernard Gnanapragasam, Chairman of Caritas Sri Lanka – SEDEC, who spoke about the importance of remembering, healing, and continuing the mission of service.

One of the most heart-touching moments was the launch of the Tsunami Commemoration Theme Song, “Tides of Hope and Resilience,” composed by Caritas Sri Lanka. The song carried memories of loss and the strength of those who rebuilt their lives. A dramatic performance, “A Glimpse of Memories,” took the audience back to the tragic day of December 26, 2004, using powerful storytelling and visuals to portray the destruction and the long journey of recovery.

Rev. Fr. Charles Hewawasam, who was the Parish Priest at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Matara during the tsunami, delivered the keynote speech. He shared emotional stories about that day—the fear, the loss, and the incredible bravery of survivors. He also highlighted Caritas Sri Lanka’s crucial role in providing immediate relief and support to affected communities.

Survivors from Galle, Batticaloa, and Colombo then took the stage to share their personal experiences. Their stories were filled with pain but also with determination and gratitude for the kindness and support that helped them rebuild their lives.

His Excellency Most Rev. Archbishop Brian Udaigwe, Papal Nuncio of the Holy See to Sri Lanka, spoke about the importance of standing together during difficult times. His words reminded everyone that remembering the past helps create a better, more compassionate future.

A traditional dance performance added cultural richness to the event, celebrating the strength and heritage of the communities that endured the disaster. Chief Guest Mr. Alistair Dutton praised Caritas Sri Lanka’s dedication and humanitarian work, recognizing the organization’s role in helping thousands recover and rebuild.

A particularly emotional moment was when Caritas Sri Lanka honored families affected by the tsunami from Colombo, Galle, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, and Jaffna. Their resilience was a powerful reminder of the human spirit’s ability to overcome challenges. Caritas Sri Lanka also presented a special Tsunami Souvenir Book to distinguished guests, capturing stories of loss, survival, and recovery.

As the event came to a close, Rev. Fr. Luke Nelson, National Director of Caritas Sri Lanka, gave a heartfelt vote of thanks, expressing gratitude to all who made the event possible and to those who continue supporting disaster-affected communities. The Sri Lankan National Anthem was sung as a final tribute, bringing the commemoration to an end—not as a conclusion, but as a commitment to continuing the journey.

Even after 20 years, the pain of the tsunami remains, but so does the strength of those who survived. This event was not just about remembering the past—it was about celebrating resilience, recognizing the unbreakable human spirit, and reminding the world that even in the face of great tragedy, hope can rise again. Caritas Sri Lanka remains dedicated to ensuring that no community faces disaster alone.
