On the 9th of January 2025, Caritas Sri Lanka – SEDEC, in collaboration with CAFOD, organized an ethno-drama program in Iyankani Village, Batticaloa. This program is a part of the CAFOD project’s efforts to help communities reconcile and move forward, focused on creating peace among Sri Lanka’s diverse communities. Running from 9:00 AM to 3:30 PM, the program provided an interactive space for participants to share their experiences, discuss challenges, and find collective solutions.

The program brought together 8 male and 16 female participants, alongside the program coordinator and Director of the Batticaloa Diocesan Centre Rev. Fr. Anthony Jesuraj. Discussions and activities of the ethno-drama program were led by Rev. Sr. Deepa Fernando, whose engaging facilitation style ensured everyone participated meaningfully.

The main objective of the program was to promote peace and reconciliation within the community through the medium of ethno-drama. Participants were encouraged to openly share their concerns and collaborate on addressing common issues. Women played a significant role in the program, taking the lead in group activities where they discussed their community’s struggles, and worked together on solutions.

One of the highlights was the use of the “problem tree” technique, which helped participants identify the root causes of their problems and brainstorm practical solutions. Healing exercises were also included, providing emotional relief and helping to build trust and unity among participants. These activities strengthened personal connections and set the stage for future peaceful collaboration within the community.

A significant achievement of the program was the creation of a new self-help group. This group is expected to be a driving force in addressing local social challenges, building stronger communities, and continuing peacebuilding efforts at the grassroots level.

Caritas Sri Lanka – SEDEC remains dedicated to promoting peace and reconciliation in Sri Lanka. Bringing people together for meaningful dialogue and collaborative action helps to empower communities to create lasting change and work towards a united and peaceful future.
