Mandaitivu Maha Vidyalayam is a government secondary school located in Jaffna District. There are 200-250 students studying in the school. Under the ‘Stepping Stone to Safeguarding Sri Lanka’s Natural Environment’ (SSEP) project by Caritas- HUDEC Jaffna an Environmental Children’s Group was formed in this school.
However, the students faced severe drinking water problems here since the only well in the school was abandoned, as it became unusable. So as per the request made by the principal of the school, the well in the school was restored and a proper water supply system with a water tank & a motor was fixed by Caritas Jaffna – HDEC for the use of the students in the school.
The well opening ceremony was held on 15th of November 2022 along with a tree planting campaign at the school. Staffs & the Director of Caritas Jaffna, the SSEP NC team & religious leaders participated in this event. Rev. Fr. Eugene Francis, the Director of Caritas Jaffna – HUDEC, opened the well and the entire water supply system for the use of students. Nearly 15-20 trees were also planted on the day. A visibility board was also established regarding the well opening in the school.
Later the SSEP NC team had a discussion with the members of the Children Group. The students shared their experiences regarding their exposure visit to department of agriculture under SSEP during the discussion.
